On the 20th of August 2020, we saw a sudden problem in Gmail, Google Drive, and Meet. All these services appeared to be offline. Some users could access them, but mostly, they were down. Google immediately got on the case and said they were investigating the outage. According to a post on Google’s status page, they knew the problem.

Another update came that said the same thing, that they were still looking into it.

According to the Google status page, the following services were affected:

  • Google Drive
  • Google Docs
  • Google Meet
  • Gmail
  • Google Voice

All the other services offered by Google were working properly.

Now, as far as iOS and Android app development services are concerned, this is a common thing. Sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. But Google is something that we all think is above such problems.

Apparently not.

If we go back in time a little bit, we see that it happens to the best of us.

Here are some of the times when Google stopped working.

Year 2013:

In 2013, we saw that Google went dark for about 2 minutes. Now, that is not that big a deal, right?

But it is. The two minutes that Google was dark saw a 40% decrease in internet traffic. Now, that is a huge deal. Every Android and iOS app development services company dreams of having a status like this.

For most people, it lasted for somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes.

Year 2017:

Again, we saw Google and some other services going down in 2017. This time, it was Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube. This one was massive, to say the least.

Year 2019:

In 2019, an outage took out YouTube, Gmail, Snapchat, Nest, Discord, and many other services Google offers. They found that the problem came from Google Cloud services that power not only the Google apps but others as well. Other apps that were affected were Vimeo and Shopify, among others.

There have been other localized events, but nothing as major as the above-mentioned situations.

This proves that even giant tech companies have a hard time now, and then if you have a small to medium business worried about your app or website crashing, it’s time you started working on a backup strategy.
